Plot

Pradeepan is a painter who lives a content life with his wife and four children. However, his life changes when he joins a government project regarding overpopulation.

Star Performances

The writing of Nizam Rawther and the camerawork are perhaps the only few redeeming qualities of this otherwise preachy film.

Analysis

‘Oru Bharatha Sarkar Ulpannam’ had recently gained limelight for its tiff with the Censor Board, regarding the title of the film. Some maintain that the Censor Board had gone overboard with their decision to trim the title of this movie.

However, after watching this film, one wonders if the fight was even worth it. In terms of controversy and the nature of the film, ‘Oru Bharatha Sarkar Ulpannam’ will remind some of ‘ Udta Punjab Click to look into! >> Read More... ’ and ‘ Poster Boys Click to look into! >> Read More... ’. In fact, ‘Poster Boys’ [already a remake of a Marathi classic] had a similar theme as well. However, when it came to execution, as well as entertainment, this dramedy bears resemblance to none of the above.

The film begins on a decent note, and the rustic setting only intrigues the viewers to go ahead. However, as the movie proceeds, the narrative loses its focus. Sometimes, it looks like a satire gone wrong. On other occasion, it looks like a family drama, and by the time the climax arrives, the film turns into a legal battle. Despite the efforts of the late Nizam Rawther, one can’t help but ponder if the makers were even focused on this film.

Malayalam cinema is well known for its satirical films. However, in that context, ‘Oru Bharatha Sarkar Ulpannam’ cuts a sorry figure. Under no circumstance is this film anywhere close to riveting, or even engaging, especially in the second half. The very core of a satirical film, i.e. crisp one liners are missing from this film. Even most of the acting performances are not very satisfying, Aju Varghese and Gouri Kishan being some noble exceptions.

What's There?

  • Rustic visuals
  • Some acting performances
  • Writing by Nizam Rawther

What's Not There?

  • Poor execution
  • Lack of nuance in the narrative
  • Identity crisis that ruins the experience
  • Extremely preachy second half

Verdict

‘Oru Bharatha Sarkar Ulpannam’ is a satire that held the potential to reveal the half-hearted intent behind executing government schemes. However, the execution was far from impressive. Only a few acting performances and some visuals manage to salvage this movie somehow.
