Joseph Losey was a movie director from America. He was born on the 14th of January 1909. He studied drama at the Harvard University. He directed the politics related play Little Old Boy which brought him a lot of attention despite it being a flop. Sinclair Lewis, the famous author, and playwright offered him to direct the play Jayhawker shortly. He left for the Russian Federation in 1953 to learn dramatics the Russian way. The next year saw him giving direction to Triple a Plowed Under, which the actors performed in the Broadway theater. 
In the two years of 1946-47, Losey worked with the exiled person Bertolt Brecht and also actor Charles  Laughton on Brecht’s play Galileo. Brecht left the United States shortly after. He was hired by Seymour Nebezel to direct a movie adapted from Fritz Lang’s M with the setting being Los Angeles.
FBI blacklisted Losey for a long time due to his association with many problematic people such as Bertolt Brecht, Hans Eisler and Elizabeth Hawes, his former wife. All of these individuals were part of the list made by the House of Un- American Activities Committee (HUAC). Losey was even suspected to be a Stalinist and a communist. Losey already had a contract with Radio-Keith-Orpheum (RKO) but Hughes, its new owner, doubted that Losey was a communist, so he did not provide him any work. He got the chance to break this contract and direct The Lawless for Paramount Pictures instead, thanks to Schary, the previous owner of RKO.  He then left to Europe where he was engaged with the play Stranger on the Prowl. He came back to the US but realized nobody was ready to give him work due to his tarred reputation. Thus, he left for Rome and finally settled in London in 1953. 
Losey worked in Great Britain on some films with his English debut being The Sleeping Tiger. He kept false names in this as well as most of his films to protect the blacklisting of actors he worked with. These were The Servant of 1963, Accident of 1967, and The Go-Between of 1971. The first movie listed won three British Academy Film Awards. The Go-Between won numerous awards from BAFTA and Writer’s Guild of Great Britain.
Soon, Losey directed Modesty Blaise, which was a spy fiction movie based on Peter O’ Donnell’s comic of the same title. In the year 1975, he succeeded in making the picture Life of Galileo, which was based on the same play; it was directed by him while he was in the US. He also worked on Monsieur Klein, which was based on real historical circumstances regarding the situation of the Jews in France. This movie showcased his ability to work even in the French Language domain. Another movie was Don Giovanni, which secured several Cesar awards.
Joseph Losey’s films were derived from real life events. The last movie he got engaged with before he died was Steaming.  He died on the 22nd of June, 1984.
