Susan was born in the Bronx. But she grew up in New York City's Mount Vernon neighborhood. Her father, Leonard Essman, was a clinical oncologist and internist. While Zora, her mother, was a Russian teacher at “Sarah Lawrence College.” She is the great-granddaughter of Leo Feodoroff, a silent film actor and Russian opera impresario. Essman is Jewish. She moved from Russia and Poland with her ancestors. With a bachelor's degree, she graduated from “SUNY Purchase College.”

Essman performed in venues across the country for three decades. She featured as a guest on Johnny Carson's “Tonight Show” on 5th January 1989. Her debut half-hour special aired on HBO's “One Night Stand” on September 20, 1992. She has featured in TV shows, such as “Heroes of Jewish Humor and A History of Jewish Comedy.” Her ethnic background heavily influenced her comedy.

In July 2007, Essman debuted as a stand-up comedian in the United Kingdom at the Corn Exchange, “Newbury Comedy Festival.” In England, she starred in the British television show “8 Out of 10 Cats.”

Essman debuted in “Crocodile Dundee II (1988)” and “Punchline (1988).” But, she is primarily known as Susie Greene, the wife of Jeff Greene (played by Jeff Garlin) in the HBO comedy series “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” Her character was named the greatest on television by Slate in 2007.

Susan also played Helen Higgins on Comedy Central's “Crank Yankers.” She was an occasional correspondent on the network's “The Daily Show” during its first season. On 17th August 2008, she appeared in Comedy Central's “Roast of Bob Saget.” She also voiced “Mittens” (the cat) in the 2008 Disney animated picture “Bolt.” She later reprised in the 2009 short “Super Rhino,” released on the film's home media. Susan also appeared on Regis Philbin's version of “Million Dollar Password.”

In September 2008, Essman married Jim Harder, a commercial real estate broker. Her pet is a Shih Tzu, Popeye. Joy Behar is her close friend. Essman's book, “What Would Susie Say: Bullshit Wisdom About Love, Life, and Comedy” was published by Simon & Schuster in October 2009.
