He was very small when his mother passed away. His father was a postmaster at Quetta so he and his brother lived with their grandparents at Chunian till 8th standard of schooling. The partition took place when he was 12 standard and his brother was in B. A final year. They had to move from there to Ludhiana leaving their education incomplete. After three months at a refugee camp in Kurukshetra both the brothers earned their respective degrees and received job offers from the government. They accepted it and Shyam Kapoor joined as the P.A to the camp officer Col. Puri. Later he came to Bombay with a navy officer whom he knew.

The navy officer arranged boarding and lodging in the city of Bombay. At this time Shyam Kapoor was 21 years old. One day at Kings Circle in Bombay he stopped to see a film shooting and asked the supplier if he could try a small scene. The supplier ignored him but the assistant asked him if he could speak the dialogue. He cleared in the first take. The next day he went across to Dadar Naka to collect his payment and there he became a part of the network. He started his work as a junior artist for the next few years. It was a time when he met an actor-filmmaker Guru Dutt during the shoot of the song Babuji Dheere Chalna, Pyar Me Zara Shambhala in Aar Paar (1954). He joined Guru Dutt as an assistant and started his work with the unit in the film Mr. & Mrs.55 in September 1954.

From this date, he worked with Guru Dutt till his death. He served as assistant director in various films such as Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), Pyaasa (1957) Qaid(1975) and Resham Ki Dori(1974). Also, he has credit as assistant director manager for Aakhri Dao (1958) and Qaid (1975). Till 1975 he worked with Guru Dutt after that he directed films independently.
