In early September 2020, Johnny Bakshi was admitted to Juhu’s Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Mumbai after he suffered from shortness of breath. Here, he was diagnosed with pneumonia and tested positive for COVID-19. On September 5, he suffered a heart attack and died at the age of 88. He passed between 1:30 to 2:20 am. His final rites were held at a Mumbai crematorium surrounded by his family members. Many legendary actors shared their grieves and paid tributes on social media. Johnny Bakshi is alive in this profession, and the legacy is carried by his son, actor Brando Bakshi.

He was one of the most unique, full-throated laughs, which was his signal greeting. He was a rare personality who was loved by everyone who came in contact with him. He was born in a family of landowners in the North West Frontiers Province (now in Pakistan) in 1932. He spent his early years in Orissa, finally landing up a job in Kolkata. He was always good in sports, and played football and Hockey for Mohan Bagan, and got a job on Railways based on his boxing capabilities.

He landed in Bombay in the 1960s and drifted into Filmalaya. He did odd jobs in production and got to know the directors and the producers. He even acted in a couple of films.
