Raj Amit Kumar is a filmmaker. He was born on 1st of April, 1978, in Florida, USA. He completed his graduation from the College of Staten Island (CUNY), with a degree of Arts in Media and Cinema Studies, in 2006. He was appraised for his excellence in Academics and was awarded the George Custer Memorial Award. He received the National Scholarship of India for his academics and in 2009, he won the first position at the University Film and Video Association for Best Faculty Screenwriting. He had his PhD in Cinema and Media from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He was an alumnus at the New York's City University.

Coming to his career, he began making his first picture titled as Unfreedom: Blemished Light. He directed, produced and co-wrote the script with Damon J Taylor. It is a 2014 drama movie released on 29th of May in North America. The story relied on violence and identity. Victor Banerjee, Preeti Gupta, Ankur Vikal, Bhavani Lee, Andrew Platner, Al Kana, Bhavani Uday, and Adil Hussain are the stars. The censor board did not pass the photoplay at the beginning. The ban of the film is India was widespread all over the country. They negotiated to release it in India after deleting some scenes from it. In 2009, it won the first prize in the Faculty Screenwriting Competition at the University Video and Film Association.

On 19th of April, Raj released his picture on YouTube. He stated in an interview that in spite of banning its release in India, the censor board needs to rate it. He told that he would be trying and working, sending petitions to the Prime Minister of India to make a change in their decisions. He wanted the public to support him in this matter. Resul Pookutty is the sound designer and Hari Nair is the cinematographer of it.

He is a teacher, academic, and writer. He used to teach his arts and film theory in his school from 2005 to 2009. He has written several research papers, which have been presented and published at many meetings and conferences.

He is the founder of a boutique movie distribution and production company, Dark Frames. It focuses on distributing India's Independent Films in North America. His intention with the organization was to throw light to the facts and stories related to Unfreedom in daily human life.

His upcoming projects are Black Boots and ‘Ayodhya’. He is presently working on them.

The screenplay captured the two stories in a beautiful manner. The moral of the script says the violence evokes a brutal struggle of identities against "unfreedom". The story of this film got the first Prize at Faculty Screenwriting Competition at University Film and Video Association in 2009. In 2006, Raj completed his graduation in Master of Arts in Cinema domain and completed Media Studies from College of Staten Island (CUNY).

For his outstanding academic performance there, he received George Custen Memorial Award. He also got National Scholarship of India for his outstanding academic excellence. In 2009, he got the first prize at Faculty Screenwriting Award in University Film and Video Association (UFVA). He also completed his Ph.D. Course from Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) in Cinema and Media Studies. He is also a famous writer, teacher, and Media academic.

From 2005 to 2009, He taught some of the subjects like Cinema History and Theory in his previous universities Southern Illinois University Carbondale and City University of New York. His amazing research on Cinema and writings was published in various conferences as well. In India, He is struggling too hard to release this movie. The Examining Committee did not give certification to his movie Unfreedom. After this, the revising Committee proposed some cuts to Raj Kumar for which he rejected and make an appeal against Censor Board to Central government for the cuts they are demanding in the movie. At this stage, the movie was completely banned to release in India. Other filmmakers are also coming hard against censorship in India due to ban Raj Amit Kumar movie.
