On April 18, 1917, Vasudhadevi Kashinath Khanvilkar was born in Girgaum, Mumbai, to affluent parents as Vasundhara Patwardhan. Patwardhan was more closely related to and heavily affected by her discriminating, educated father than her hardworking, strict mother. Her parents were both avid readers. When he was younger, Patwardhan read Waikar Bhatji, a translation of Oliver Goldsmith's The Vicar of Wakefield by Ramchandra Vinayak Tikekar. She attended Nathibai Damodar Thackeray School for her early education and had literary interests there. The other pupils frequently saw examples of her essays to judge their quality. She also had some musical ability, which her father fostered. At 15, she married and later changed her name to Vasundhara Krishnaji Patwardhan. Patwardhan had a propensity toward original thought.

She had the chance to hear talks, kirtans, and other public forms of information and cultural diffusion during her formative years, and these experiences left a lasting influence on her. Her reading and reflection as a result of these experiences, as well as the creativity of her writing and her reflective, sensitive mind, gave her exceptional credibility. Writing is an innate art, according to Patwardhan. She understood her stories through her observations of her surroundings, women's difficulties, and everyday occurrences in other people's life. Her writing even exhibits a romantic love for feminism. She spent more than 40 years as a close friend of Sarojini Vaidya and was a fan of the literature of Malatibai Bedekar, Iravati Karve, and Durga Bhagwat. Sansar Shobha, Patwardhan's first book of short story, was released in 1951.

She continued writing collections after that, including Shodh (1954), Chehra (1958), Pipani (1961), Antarpat (1962), Pratibimb (1963), Upasana (1969), and Paithani (1979). Her novels Preetichi Haak (1951) and Netra (1987), in addition to these collections of short stories, were also highly well-read when they were first published. In 1954, she released the play Hirkani; in 1959, a brief essay called Mi Bhatakte Aahe; and in 1984, the novel Runanubandh. Her other works include the travelogue Haaaye and the children's book Jayatachya Goshti. In total, Patwardhan produced roughly 250 stories.

Her works have been translated into Gujarati and Hindi, among other languages. Her short tale "Madhuchi Aai" served as the basis for the film Ekiti. In addition, she created the play Hirkani, which included M.G. Ranganekar, the recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, and was based on the tale "Navetil Pani." Both won favor with the public. In addition, Patwardhan wrote the novel Sangharsh based on her spiritual insights and experiences.
