They fell in love after working in two films together, and they eventually got married at Thiruthani Murugan Temple secretly by running away in April 2001. Rajakumaran’s debut directorial film was ‘ Nee Varuvai Ena’, released in the year 1999. He was lauded with 'Tamil Nadu State Film Award' for 'Best Storywriter' for this film. The critics also well lifted the film. The producer of this movie was R B Choudary, who gave another film to Rajakumaran to direct. The film was ‘Vinnukkum Mannukkum’, starring Vikram, Devayani, Sarathkumar, and Kushboo. The film turned out to be a box office failure and also was criticized by the critics.

During the shoot, actor Vikram was not happy with things as they were going on regarding the shots and Rajakumaran also miscalculated the dates of Sarathkumar and the shooting took a year to complete. He then directed and also produced a film in 2003, named, ‘Kadhaludan,' starring Murli. The film didn’t receive many good reviews; though it grabbed the Tamil Nadu State Film Award of Best Family Film. After this project he took a break from direction and worked as a film distributor.

Rajakumaran launched a project name ‘ Thirumathi Thamizh’ along with his wife. He played the lead role and Devayani playing the role opposite to him. The film went on floor after a lot of delay in February 2008. It didn’t run well at the box office and received negative reviews. He has acted in three films apart from his production film, ‘Thirumathi Thamizh’. The latest being S Rajamouli’s film ‘ Vallavanukku Pullum Aayudham’, in which he played the role of Raj.
