Vivek Velmurugan is an Indian lyricist predominantly working in the Tamil Music Industry. He has also worked in other languages such as Kannada, Telugu, and Malayalam. He made his debut as lyricist in 2015 in Tamil films. He later received critical acclaim for his writing in 36 Vayadhinile (2015) and
Jil Jung Juk (2016). Vivek was born in 1985 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. He later moved to Chennai, India at a very young age. He completed his higher secondary education from Vidya Mandir Higher Secondary School. Then he studied engineering at Rajalakshmi Institute of Technology in Chennai.
However, his passion was writing poems and short stories since childhood. Vivek’s primary influence was the famous poet, Vairamuthu. He started song writing after the completion of his Engineering degree. Vivek created his portfolio and started to send his songs to various music composers. Finally, his lyrics caught the attention of new-age composer Santosh Narayanan and he was given a chance in the film
Enakkul Oruvan (2015). Later that year, he worked with the same composer in the movie 36 Vayadhinile, for which he earned his first nomination for Best Lyricist in IIFA Utsavam Awards.
He then worked with composer Sreejith Sachin in the film, Indru Nethru Nalai, whose songs became massive hit. Vivek shot to fame with his lyrical skills in 2016 with the sports-drama film,
Irudhi Suttru, again in collaboration with Santosh Narayanan. The film produced hits such as Hey Sandakaara, Vaangaji Warning, Usuru Narambula, Kaalathi Miratti and Poda Poda. Critics also praised his writing skills and termed Vivek as the next big thing in the Tamil Music Industry. After the success in the film, Vivek was flooded with offers and 2016 remained the biggest year of his career. He collaborated with Santosh Narayanan in five more films that year and produced numerous hits.
Most famous of the lot is the Thalaivar Adhiradi Rap in Kabali, starring the superstar Rajinikanth. Vivek also created mass hysteria among the masses with his emotional and creative lyrics in the film Jil Jung Juk, starring Siddharth. He especially grabbed the attention for his lyrics in the chart-topping, Shoot the Kuruvi. The music composer of the film,
