Dasari Yoganand was born on 16th April, 1922 in Madras. He passed away when he was of the age 84 in Chennai on 23rd November, 2006. He is a very eminent Film Director. His wife’s name is Hanumayamma. He is the proud son of Laxmi Bai and Venkata Das. D. Subbayya, a businessman, who adopted Yoganands.

Yoganand learned photography from D. Subbayya and became an amazing photographer. He loves to direct plays and dramas very much. When he was in Machilipatnam he met Yadavalli Nageshwara and Tugala Chalapathi Rao. Later he went to Bangalore to study radiology and then he went to Chennai to lend a hand to his father in the year 1939. After the death of his father, he joined Banerjee of Newton Studios. He also started working with the very popular cinematographer M.A Rehman. Yoganand was also into The Quit India Movement which took place in the year 1942. He also met many leaders like Rajagopalachari, Sambamurthi, Tanguturi Prakasan and Bulusu during the Freedom Movement. He has worked with many prominent people like L.V Prasad and Gudavallu Ramabrahmam. In the year 1943, he worked in the film Mayalokam as an Editor and did a wonderful job.

He also worked for the Assistant Director profile with Gudavallu Ramabrahmam. In the year 1953, he did the film Ammalakkalu which was in Telugu, Marumagal which was in Tamil; the director of both these films are Leena Chettiar. He also worked with Krishna Pictures and did many noteworthy films like Madurai Veeran in the year 1956. He got an offer to direct the film Thodu Dongalu; this film got released in the year 1954. The writer of the movie Thodu Dongalu is Yoganand and this film got many awards and the Merit Certificate by the President of India as well. The film Thodu Dongalu won the award in the China Film Festival.

Yoganand has won many National Awards for his great work over the years. In the year 1954, he got the Certificate for the Best Feature Film for the film Thodu Dongalu which was a splendid movie. In the year 1960, he received the President’s Silver Medal for his Feature Film named Prathiban Kanavu, this film was in the Tamil language. He also won the Kalaimamani award in Tamil Nadu in the year 1981; he received this award from the Government of Tamil Nadu. He was a very talented person and people respect him a lot.
