Plot

DEATH NOTE, the popular manga series gets its obligatory Hollywood remake. The story starts with an intelligent and handsome high school student Light Yagami who is the son of a Police Officer. He is obsessed with crime and wants to make the world free from criminals. One day he finds a Notebook with the name Death Note. It is a notebook of a Shinigami known as Death God in Japan. By reading the rules in the book, he finds that he can kill a person by writing their name in it. He confirms it by killing an escaped criminal. Now Light Yagami essentially becomes a god. As the deaths of the criminals increase, the police and the people become terrified. Light makes his announcements to the public through recorded tapes and proclaims why he is killing criminals. People start calling him Kira. The real fun and excitement start when Shinigami enters the world and a new officer, L, is appointed to find Kira. The battle of cleverness between Light and L to find Kira becomes the theme. Will L be able to find Kira? Will Light come to know about L?

Star Performance:

Death Note is a mind game between Light and L. With so many twists and mind tactics between each other, each of them faces many obstacles. The plot most focuses on L and Light's intellectual fight, battles of tricks, and making one another unsure about what his intentions are. This conflict allows for a dynamic relationship between Light and L. There’s grudging respect between them, and they recognize each other as worthy foes.

Analysis:

The themes of moral ambiguity and killing powers make it a dark story to tell. Instead, when the movie finished, it turned out to be just a rushed sequence of events, most of which seemed incoherent if seen next to the anime, which was a very clever story. The positive note in all this is that sometimes both L and Light's actors delivered scenes that made me suggest that they were up to the roles if the original anime was to follow.

What’s There?

  • Relatable scenes
  • Amazing role play

What’s not There?

  • Fast-Paced movie
  • Not justice to the Manga

Verdict:

If we look at the ultimate focus, Death Note is about a world from a young boy’s point of view. This anime might tear you down. It has drama and hauntingly relevant real-life scenarios. We don’t know whether to feel empathy or hatred for the main characters. If you are looking for a thriller series, Death Note is the best watch.
