Plot

The Dark Tower focuses on the lives of Jake and Roland. Jake is an eleven-year-old with fanatic visions about some creatures destroying a mythical tower that eventually brings doom to the human race. His visions are deemed to be a result of trauma caused by his father’s death, no one believes them to be real. Suddenly, some men claiming to be psychiatrists offer to help Jake. He soon realizes that they are the monsters from his dreams and tries to flee.

Through his visions, Jake is led to Mid-World where he encounters Roland. He tells Jake about Walter who has been kidnapping kids with psychic powers to destroy “Dark Tower”. The destruction of this tower would enable a free passage to monsters on Earth. Back on Earth, Walter is on a search for Jake and has killed his stepfather and mother. Jake is devastated to see all this, but Roland vows to avenge their deaths. Soon it is them two against the power-packed army of Walter.

Will they be able to save the Earth?

Star Performances

The Dark Tower is a film with a diverse cast containing actors from all age groups. But as a child actor, Tom Taylor’s performance deserves to be praised. He portrays the role of Jake Chambers, a devastated kid who has just lost his father and has erratic visions. His role is quite complex for a young actor, but Tom excels all the expectations. Tom’s efforts and determination are visible on screen to the viewers.

Analysis

The Dark Tower is a loose adaptation of the novel of the same name by Stephen King that has quite a fandom. For the readers of the novel, this movie was a disaster. Having read the source material, they felt that half of the characters weren’t even in the film and that it failed to depict the essence of the book. They hated it and that sums up all the negative backlash this piece received.

To an outsider, this movie seemed to be a promising watch. It was a fiction-based film with a clear sense of realism in It. There were multiple worlds and excessive visual effects but somehow it was balanced on screen. The plot execution was pleasing and although the story was basic and overused, the viewers enjoyed it.

What’s There?

  • The use of visual effects to make this cinematic experience more pleasing.
  • The child protagonist’s acting skills are exceptional.

What’s not There?

  • The films seemed to be fast-paced for many viewers.
  • The storyline wasn’t devised meticulously to meet the expectations of the readers of the novel.

Verdict

The Dark Tower is an action thriller with a tinge of mystery and fiction in it. If you have been a fan or reader of the novel, you will surely be disappointed. But, as a standalone and an individual piece, this movie delivers just fine to the audience.
