Plot

Twin brothers Raja and Desingu, are poles apart in terms of personality and profession. Desingu is a dedicated police inspector, while Raja is a carefree lad, who is passionate about volleyball. Raja faces innumerable hurdles in his quest for volleyball supremacy, yet he overcomes most of the challenges. Will the two unite?

The only good thing about this film is that it ended. Yes, that’s how bad this film is.

Analysis

More than a decade ago, a film released, titled ‘Deshdrohi’. On paper, it appeared to be a vigilante social drama, that addressed the problems faced by immigrants from northern India in Maharashtra, and how one man takes it upon himself to solve this problem.

Now how is that connected to ‘Eppodhum Raja’, a Tamil sports drama released in 2024? Well, both had noble intentions, but the execution of the screenplay was so poor, that it would be ridiculous to call these projects films in the first place. ‘Eppodhum Raja’ claims to focus on volleyball, but it appears like an overextended comedy sketch that was exported from YouTube to the 70 mm. silver screen.

Truth be told, even YouTube videos have better special effects. The movie was not very long, the runtime being only around 2 hours. Yet, thanks to an audacious screenplay, with no sense of logic or common sense, every minute seemed almost impassable. Anyone who has survived this film will just thank themselves when the end credits roll. This is certainly not a project H Murugan would like to remember in the future.

The acting performances were far from impressive. Viji Murugan plays a double role. Yet, in neither of the roles, does he manage to strike a chord with the audience. The other actors are simply there for the sake of it. For the screenplay, the less said, the better.

Verdict

‘Eppodhum Raja’ is a good case study of how NOT TO make a film. The project, which aimed at infusing sports with the regular commercial tropes, turned out to resemble neither. If you wish to test your patience, or your survival skills, you can opt for this feature film!
