Plot

The movie tells the story of a middle-class guy in his twenties, Ashwin who has been deeply interested in bikes and the bike racing world since his childhood and wanted to own a bike of his own choice. However, he faces several hurdles and struggles. His conservative father is afraid of him failing in life after choosing bike racing, so he always opposes his stance. Although he still tries to pursue his passion while hiding it from his family. He bought a bike on loan and started participating in street racing. But his struggles end here; he is lack of professional training kept haunting him. Moreover, as his debt accumulates, he has no choice but to win the race and pay off the debt using the price of money. Will he be able to convince his family? Will he be able to win the bike race? The further story of the film answers these questions.

Star Performances

Akhil Santosh blends in the character of Aswin. Ashwin is a passionate person who buries his dream, succumbing to his father’s reprimand. Akhil skillfully and efficiently showcases his struggles while pursuing his passion. However, his appearance in the initial sequences doesn't give us the feeling of a college student. Bala justifies his role as a mechanic in the film. Though appearing for only a short duration, Lavanya has done a decent job. Subramanian Mathavan plays Akil's father, and his performance is the film's highlight. Also, Arvind did a fine job while portraying the villain of the film.  The rest of the cast supported the film’s narrative.

Analysis

The kinds of films that resonate with the audience are the one that inspires them to follow their passion against all odds and fight for their dreams. The pursuit of the protagonist in these kinds of films helps the audience feel connected to their journey in life. Racer is one such film that inspires viewers to take action to achieve their dreams in life. Despite the budget constraints, this film does the best it can with the limited resources in hand. The sensibilities in the writing that elevate this drama, the relatable one-liners in the first half, and the innovative narration take us back to the good old days when our little dreams mattered the most. Though, we have already seen movies based on so great father-son relationships, it doesn’t feel repeated in this film because of the characterization of the characters in the movie. While the first half is quite interesting, the second half is where the writing falters. The movie shows no such conflicts and struggles that we can’t predict or have already seen in other similar kinds of films. The romantic sequences are engaging and don't ruin the narrative, but the story doesn’t allow love to bloom and make it feel forced on the audience. The songs are force-fit into the narrative which negates the viewers’ interest in the story. The makers could have avoided the song in the second half as it slowed the narrative. The biking and racing aspects of the film are intriguing and well-made. The cinematography skillfully captures the sport’s thrills of the sport with the limited resources in hand, which deserves to be praised. Also, the editing makes the narrative compact and enhances its visual appeal to the viewers.

However, the ending of Racer leaves us feeling somewhat dissatisfied as it doesn’t show whether Ashwin achieved his dream of becoming a professional bike racer.

What’s There?

  • The film is based on an inspiring story that resonates with the audience.
  • Decent acting performances by the cast enhance the film’s appeal.
  • The visuals and cinematography are pretty decent when we consider the limited resources.

What’s Not There?

  • The audience left the theatres with an undeserving climax.
  • Lack of resources is a central drawback of the film.
  • Songs disrupt the flow of the story rather than supporting it.
  • There are some significant plot holes in the story.

Verdict

With a simple premise, a promising performance by the actor playing the younger version of Ashwin, and a decent commentary on middle-class families, Racer” manages to keep us engaged with the idea of the film. However, the inconsistencies in writing, the ambiguity regarding the central ideology, and the safe climax miss the chance to stand out from the rest of its kind and successfully cross the finishing line.
