Plot

The story is set in a small village in Kumari district on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border where Samuel, a ten-year-old boy, develops a liking for the game of cricket after watching Sachin Tendulkar Born in Dadar in Mumbai, Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar i >> Read More... playing cricket. So, he asks his father to buy a bat, but his father scolds him citing their family condition. However, Samuel learns about a commercial that was popular in the late 90s and finds a way to buy the bat along with his friend Rajesh. He is happy to know that he can get a cricket bat just by collecting trunk cards. How does this obsession impact his life and that of those around him? Whether or not Samuel manages to fulfill his ambition forms the rest of the story.

Star Performances

The film is praiseworthy for its realistic casting. Both Ajidhan Thavasimuthu as Sam and KG Vishnu as Rajesh deliver stellar performances. Ajithan Thavasimuthu Bio coming soon... >> Read More... skillfully portrayed an innocent boy who feared of being caught while collecting trunk cards. But, what truly gains viewers’ attention is KG Vishnu, who comes as his friend and reminds the audience of their childhood friend with his brilliant portrayal. In a few frames, he makes us laugh just by his look. Their chemistry feels nostalgic. However, they being new to acting, struggle to depict strong emotions of sadness and regret. Also, the character of Jeba (SB Aparna), a young tuition teacher who shows compassion and concern for the kids, isn't wholesomely developed which makes it difficult for the actor to justify the role fully. The rest of the cast supported the film’s narrative.

Analysis

Siruvan Samuel is a film set in southern Tamil Nadu and it transports us to a nostalgic world of our childhood memories where the children used to play outdoor games rather than being immersed in their phones and social media. It promotes the ideal of social activities of the pre-internet age. The film’s narrative revolves around Samuel, a cricket-obsessed boy who wanted to play but his peers neglected him for being too young.  Later, he learned that he could play if he had a cricket bad. Hence, his journey of trying different ways and means to get a cricket bat embarks. The director adopted a bold approach to showcase this story comically. While he deserves to be praised for opting for a different approach, the film, on the other hand, diverts from its main plot. The film’s writing is fine, but the lack of characterization and inter-character relationship make it difficult for the audience to feel connected with them. The paucity of backdrop makes it challenging for the actors to showcase their full potential. The film starts strong with Samuel’s interest in cricket but becomes confusing halfway through the screen time. The efforts to showcase the indigenous culture of the region felt forced as they hardly supported the main plot of the movie. However, the film did redeem itself with some dark themes and foreshadowing. The editing is decent despite the jarring effect opted by Ajith.  Sivananth Gandhi's cinematography captures the lush greenery of the place vividly and immerses us in the setting. The film’s music and background score diminish the emotional hold of the scenes. The second half is comparatively slower than the first half of the film.

What’s There?

  • The film is based on an engaging story.
  • The visuals and cinematography are pretty decent.
  • The film is nostalgic for the pre-internet children.

What’s Not There?

  • The music is the main villain of the film.
  • The poor execution makes the film dull at times.
  • The overstretched second half fails to serve the audience right.
  • Senseless Sequences that don’t have any relation with the narrative of the story.

Verdict

The film depicts how the children’s psychology was affected by the initial stage of rural urbanization. It also talks about the ill-treatment of children by their poor and frustrated parents in rural areas. The film is made up with too much heart, but the poor execution and other flaws make it an amateur attempt.
