Plot

Sisters Pinky and Bulbul run a beauty parlor of their own in the Lanka area of Varanasi. The two are stark opposites in terms of their skin, as well as their personalities.

One day, a corpse is found within the premises of the parlor. As the case develops, the focus grows more on the beauty salons and our society's obsession with fair skin.

Star Performances

Gagandeep Singh captures the rustic look of Varanasi with his able camerawork.

The soundtrack by Chintu Sarthak Kalia and Arbind Lyton is also meaningful, if not perfect.

Actors Sulagna Panigrahi and Khushboo Gupta have done justice to the roles they portrayed.

Analysis

'Is beauty skin deep' is a question most Indians are familiar with. However, very few dare to even talk about it openly, forget portraying it the way 'Pinky Beauty Parlour' does.

Without meandering the movie gets straight to the point from the word go. Through flashbacks, we get to know the reason why one of the protagonists was facing discrimination while the other just casually went about it without even realizing it. The stark contrast in the two personalities, depicted through the skin color, is quite striking, and on that note, Akshay Singh has done a really good job. Given he had to wait for years for his movie to be released, Akshay ensured that the rustic flavor of the narrative was not missing at all.

The way the protagonist fights multiple battles on a social front is something we saw through the character of Latika, played by Bhumi Pednekar Bhumi Pednekar is Maharashtrian unconventional act >> Read More... in ' Bala Click to look into! >> Read More... .' The only difference between the two is that 'Pinky Beauty Parlour' is more nuanced and realistic in context to the sufferings of the protagonist. For that, full marks to both the lead protagonists Sulagna and Khushboo.

The film is not without flaws. However, they are not that overpowering to ruin the experience of the viewer. Some people, however, will have trouble adapting to the pace of the movie which despite being less than 2 hours long, feels a bit sluggish in some places.

What's There?

  • Good camerawork by Gagandeep Singh
  • Earnest performances from Sulagna Panigrahi and Khushboo Gupta
  • A decent soundtrack

What's Not There?

  • Minor flaws in editing
  • Slightly sluggish pace

Verdict

'Pinky Beauty Parlour' is one riveting take on the skin color-based discrimination still prevalent in certain parts of India. It might not be larger than life, but it is engaging and poses several questions to our society. You should watch this film for sure.
