Plot
Ana, a graduate from the USA, returns to her village in Madhya Pradesh. She wants to open a library for her village but finds obstacles at every doorstep. Besides, Ana also faces discrimination from many villagers due to her gender. As Ana decides to fight the elections, will she succeed against all odds?
Star PerformancesÂ
Mohammad Reza's camerawork depicts rural life quite well. The soundtrack is also good, keeping the subject of the movie in mind.Â
Seema Biswas and Bhagwan Tiwari do justice to their roles as the bickering grandmother and the village muscleman. Â
AnalysisÂ
Munshi Premchand once said, 'The soul of India [Bharat] is in its villages.' To understand the needs of the actual India, one needs to understand what the villages want. There have been some outstanding projects on this issue, 'Swades' and 'Panchayat' being some notable examples. Does 'Sir Madam Sarpanch' come in the same category or not?Â
Well, yes and no. The movie seems to take inspiration from some real-life incidents, apart from the aim to capitalize on the current political scenario. However, director Praveen Morchhale fails to make a stinging satire out of the same. 'Sir Madam Sarpanch' aimed to be another 'Peepli Live,' but in terms of execution, the film did not turn out that well.Â
The protagonist aims to bring change, and the resistance she faces is not unnatural. Some of the sequences, including the one where a bureaucrat gives a bizarre reason for denying the NOC required for the library do reflect the bureaucratic mess we are in. However, once she decides to fight the local elections, all goes for a toss. Despite the film aiming to be real and hard-hitting, it is far from that. The jibes the makers take at the current situations do not hit the right notes. Ariana Sajnani as the lead protagonist Ana does her best but is just passable.Â
Seema Biswas in the role of the bickering but tech-savvy grandma is good. So is Bhagwan Tiwari as the local rowdy Bhaiyya ji. However, their efforts are not very successful due to the sloppy narrative.Â
What's There?
• Good camerawork by Mohammad Reza
• Earnest performances from Seema Biswas and Bhagwan TiwariÂ
What's Not There?Â
• Sluggish NarrativeÂ
• Unimpressive ProtagonistÂ
• Banal humor disguised as satireÂ
VerdictÂ
'Sir Madam Sarpanch' seeks at making a difference. The script may not have been bad to begin with, but the execution is a different story altogether. In the name of satire, we have received a half-hearted docudrama.Â
