Plot

Vasudevan is a meek constable, who has been transferred to a remote town. N Peter makes him aware of the ‘rules of the town’, and Vasudevan has to face his inner demons when a convicted criminal seeks revenge.

Star Performances

The cinematographer, as well as the actors, are the only good things about this film.

They try their best to do justice to a unique concept not many would even think of attempting.

Analysis

Attempting a ‘Dirty Harry’ in India is not the easiest of options, especially if you’re not from Bollywood. However, when Rakshit Shetty Rakshit Shetty is a Kannada film actor and directo >> Read More... and his boys successfully tried it in ‘ Avane Srimannarayana Click to look into! >> Read More... ’, it gave confidence to many filmmakers, irrespective of region, to try this genre.

This is what may have driven Ullas Chemban to make ‘Anchakkallakokkan’, a unique dark comedy that also doubles up as an action thriller. The film revolves around a local folk legend, and how it holds relevance for the meek protagonist of the movie. On that note, both producer Chemban Vinod Jose and director Ullas Chemban can pat their backs.

However, these ideas go for a toss, when it comes to execution. The camerawork creates a near-perfect setting of the era the movie is set in. The visual effects are also surprisingly good.

But when it came to the story, it was anything but impressive. Despite the performances from the ensemble cast, especially Lukman and Chemban, the narrative was messed up, and irredeemable beyond a point. The wry humor in this movie disappeared as quickly as it had come.

The movie was not very long, and yet, the viewers felt uneasy, especially during the second half. The action sequences did not look natural, and at times, even the most over the top action scenes in either Sandalwood or Tollywood looked way more realistic than this film.

The only saving grace for this film was the performances of Chemban Vinod Jose and Lukman Avaran. Both are seasoned actors, and both did their job to near perfection.

What's There?

  • The camerawork of this film
  • Good performances from Lukman Avaran and Chemban Vinod Jose

What's Not There?

  • Screenplay that was ruined by sloppy execution
  • Unimpressive editing
  • Bizarre sequences that held no value

Verdict

‘Anchakkallakokkan’ is another example of how even the best of concepts can take a turn for the worse if the execution is not done the right way. The camerawork and the acting performances from Chemban Vinod Jose and Lukman Avaran are the only redeemable aspects of this otherwise below-average film.
